Prosper is a start up aiming to make the first affordable robot butler for the public. It will be able to make tea, make your bed, cook a meal, etc.
When I started they were working on Alfie and had built the prototype of this version. My main job was to make the next 4. They were based very closely on this design but with many changes to improve the robot and speed of production.
The video opposite shows 2 of the 4 robots that I built.
I would be given a CAD drawing of the fully built robot (didn't include cable runs or all electronics, but did include all 3D prints and metalwork). I would then build the robot using this and the previous made robot as a guide. I would record any places where changes were needed to aid assembly and record anywhere the CAD was not correct. I printed the 3D parts from file, fabricated the metal parts using the plasma cutter and metal bender. I also resized pulley internals on the lathe, made and installed cable runs, soldered up custom electronics and made changes to the custom PCBs.
When calibrating the robot I would: load the software onto the robot, run the code and physically move the robot into desired positions. I would then operate the robot in VR to test it was moving smoothly and all cameras and sensors worked correctly.
During my employment I spent a month in China for a research trip to meet manufacturers and learn about design processes and better design for mass manufacture. I consulted with the Chinese manufacturers about lost PLA casting and helped them set up the 3D printers we use.
