London Decom - Nov 18th 2023
London Decom is a one day Co-created event. This year it was held in the Cause (60 Dock Road) and had the theme "Feral Resurrection". There are approximately 3000 attendees and 80 leads for the event. As it is co-created, attendees are encouraged to participate in the event and all roles are volunteer roles. The participation level can vary drastically. Lead roles such as organising, building, lighting, sound, logistics or social media, will have nominated people that start a few months, up to a year before the event. Other roles like: performing, leading a workshop, building an art piece, helping decor team or joining build and strike can be any amount of time that people feel like contributing.
I was Decor Structure Co-Lead. This meant that I was available to assist any art team or decor build that wanted to make something that required a timber structure or more technical, skilled making. I helped run making sessions for the decor team for a number of months prior to the event. I explained about Decom and the principles associated with being part of this event to new participants. I was part of the build and strike team on the day, helping build art pieces, lifting them onto platforms with the MEWP and securing things safely. Setup for event starts Saturday 10am, event 9pm–5am, strike to Sunday 9am.
I also brought an adapted version of the "There Ain't Mushroom" artwork with the team. This was changed to a Jelly fish for the event. As this was a much smaller iteration of the art work, we decided to do a skill share, with Coriolan Verchezer teaching more about the LEDs and electronics. This included how they worked and the software to program them. We each designed a light sequence that went into the artwork.
